The United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA) was established by the United Nations Secretary-General in 2001 to enhance linkages between the United Nations and other partners in the region.[1] Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah was the first head of the office.[2]
UNOWA remains a relatively small political mission focussing on cross-cutting and cross-border developments which actively works with ECOWAS.[3]
Since 2007 it has been called on to report on its activities to the United Nations Security Council every six months.[4]
The current head of UNOWA is Said Djinnit.[5]
